Chi Zhang (b. 1988, Beijing, China) is a multidisciplinary visual artist and art educator who lives and works between Beijing and New York. She received a BA in Studio Art from Stony Brook University (2010) and a MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts, New York (2013). Her work has been exhibited across Asia, Europe, and the United States. Zhang has participated in residencies including Pantocrator Gallery, Shanghai, China (2012); NARS Foundation, Brooklyn, New York, USA (2023); SÍM Residency – The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists, Reykjavík, Iceland (2024); GlogauAIR On-Site Residency Program, Berlin, Germany (2024); and Studio Kura Artist Residency, Itoshima, Fukuoka, Japan (2025).
Zhang’s practice spans painting, drawing, installation, and the documentation of everyday life through the collection of ephemeral objects. Working across these mediums and drawing on personal narratives shaped by shifting social contexts of contemporary time and space, her work occupies a territory between conceptual and object-based practice. Positioned within a shared human experience, she seeks to embed psychological, emotional, and physical states within processes of making and material engagement.
Over the years, Zhang’s experience of the therapeutic qualities of art has led her to explore themes of healing as a form of self-preservation and emotional restoration. Grounded in personal experience and lived encounters, her recent projects examine how artistic practice can engage with anxiety, self-care, and equanimity—understood as a balanced state of mind, inner peace, and confidence—while bringing awareness to states that often remain unconscious. Within this framework, healing is approached not as a fixed outcome but as an ongoing, relational process embedded in artistic practice. Zhang hopes her work provides audiences with a sense of ease that encourages open exploration, contemplation, and resonance. By engaging with the work, viewers are invited to connect it to their own experiences and relate it to their personal narratives.
Alongside her artistic practice, Zhang has worked across various art-related fields and independent projects. She is also an art educator with experience teaching students of all ages in studio, classroom, and museum contexts, including programs for adults, young art professionals, and both college and high school students.
