2025
Twisted rope (attached to side), oil and acrylic on canvas (8 pieces in total)
20 x 20 cm (7.87 x 7.87 inches) each
This group of paintings draws from the coastal landscape of Itoshima, Fukuoka. Each piece in the installation references a specific rock by the water at Sakurai Futamigaura, capturing the quiet presence and poetic resonance of the seaside. A soundscape of field recordings from the site accompanies the installation, echoing the gentle rhythms of the sea.
During her stay in Itoshima, Zhang was deeply moved by the shimenawa rope used in Shinto rituals and the sacred God Stone hidden in a bamboo forest behind Kamiari Shrine—a spiritual site believed to bring energy and peace. Inspired by these local spiritual elements, she created hand-twisted ropes and attached them to the sides of each painting. These tactile additions serve as both symbolic and material connections to place, offering a quiet sense of ritual and healing.
